REVIEWS & comments

"Two of the snazziest characters in children's fiction"

Jeff Rivera, best-selling author.

Although it makes my day when I find out that someone likes the Burly & Grum books, I love reading the reviews from children more than anything else because they always tell it as it is! Here is just a small selection of reviews:

4th Grader Rukky M. Reviews Burly and Grum and The Secret City, by Kate Tenbeth
“The characters were very loveable and relatable." (January 20, 2012)

The title of this book is “Burly and Grum and the Secret City.” This story is very interesting because of the unusual friendship between Max the human, Burly the bear, and grum the unusual animal.

The animals wanted to show their friend Max a secret city where humans once lived and the treasures that were left behind. Unfortunately they met a greedy human hunter on the way who wanted to take the unusual animal to the city for his selfish gains and the treasures from the secret city.

The hunter’s assistant Tyre was a good man. The animals captured captain Qtee the hunter and Max too Tyre the hunters assistant. Their friend the angel told them to release the hunter because he can’t find his way out of the forest.

The animals, Max, and their new friend Tyre had a nice time eating cakes and tea that was given to them by Mike.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to another reader because the characters were very loveable and relatable. They seem like people I wouldn’t mind being friends with in real life. This is a great story and should be read by anyone who likes a humors story.

Burly and Grum and the Secret City is a children's book by Kate Tenbeth. It is one of the most popular book in the Burly and Grum series. Burly and Grum are two unusual creatures. Burly is a talking bear who is very large and very friendly, and Grum is a groblin. Groblins are quite unique and green. Burlington Bear, Grum the groblin and Max (the human) are best friends. Burly and Grum show Max a Secret City in the the middle of the forest but hunters are tracking them down. They knock out Burly, capture Max and want to turn the Secret City into a tourist attraction. Throw in some big cats, Grum's mother and brothers, Mike the Angel, a deer and a few ducks come to join the adventure and the day becomes very exciting. The chapters are well organized and the language is easy for kids to read. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I would highly recommend it to everyone. It is a delightful read from start to end.

LOVED this book!! A fabulous chapter book for new readers to sink their teeth into. It's chock full of cute characters: a little boy and his friends the bear, 3 groblin brothers, their mother, a host of forest animals, and an angel too. (The introduction of hunters who capture for profit brings morals into the discussion topic if read to children.) I will keep this one as a read for any children who visit my home in the years to come!

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the Burly & Grum tales to my 7-year old son. The stories are dynamic, funny and very well written. They don't patronise or dumb down children which I often find is the case with kids stories. I'd love to read more like these!
